D & W Auchterlonie
St Andrews/North Berwick
Originally the business begun by David Auchterlonie (born 1865) and Andrew W. Crosthwaite. In 1896, Crosthwaite left the business and David was joined by his brother Willie (born 1874) who was the Open Champion.
The brothers pursued careers in golf while apprenticed to R. Forgan & Son in the early 1890s. Willie had the real competitive abilities and won the rainy Open at Prestwick in 1893.
Woods were hand made and many were exported to American outlets like Alex Taylor Co and Wanamakers.
The firm comprised of David and Willie until 1901 when they employed sixteen workmen.
